GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Abilities

Skills are necessary to survive in the world. Warriors and thieves will come to depend on certain skills for survival, and all classes can become more proficient in other general skills as they become available to them. Certain classes learn certain skills much faster than other classes. For example, it is possible for all classes to "rescue" but only true warriors will develop it anywhere near to its fullest potential since they are much quicker to pick up on its intricacies. You will naturally improve at a skill through usage.

Other skills are known as abilities. These do not have to be specifically invoked but will occur naturally. Examples of these are block, dodge, and parry, which will automatically kick in during combat.

Aggro (Aggressive)
A mob that will attack anyone entering the room. Sometimes a smaller or longer or even random time delay is built in before the attack.
Corpse Retrieval
This is what everyone sooner or later has to do. When you die, you, or another helpful player character, will go corpse retrieval to get your equipment and money back. Sometimes it is successful, sometimes not, and you die again.
Emote
A command that allows the playing character to show emotion or make gestures in order to complement the use of socials. The first word of the output is always the name of the playing character. Other playing characters in the same room sees your emote, even if you at the moment is sleeping. Well used together with socials they enhances the role playing and the feeling of the game.
Frented (Force Rented)
When you 'time out' you have 1 hour to return to the game to be at the same place you were when you lost your connection. After this time, you will be force-rented or 'frented'. You then have approximately 1 hour before you will be charged money. Frent charge is very expensive, and is designed to persuade people to use the Inns in the various cities and villages throughout the world. Anyone found to be consistently dropping link instead of renting will be stripped of ALL equipment and money as punishment.
God
A god has the highest level of immortality. A god usually does the actual coding of the gamecode, add new areas, appoint new immortals and other things that makes the mud run smoothly. Gods and immortals are together doing all the different administrative chores that together makes up running the mud.
Immortal
A playing character who, after long struggle and hard work, has reached the ultimate goal and become unkillable. The price for eternal life is however that he or she can no longer interfere with normal gameplay and is supposed to contribute to the mud by leading quests, do area-building or some other task that is available. There are different levels of immortals and some are more powerful than others. Gods and immortals are together doing all the different administrative chores that together makes up running the mud.
Inns
Inns are places where the weary traveller may rest while the innkeeper looks after his equipment and treasure. Specifically, you may use inns to store your gathered equipment while you are not playing the game (we all have to sleep sometimes, there is no shame in that).
Link dead
A lot of players have problems with their links to the game. This could be very dangerous to your health in the middle of a combat. But we have worked
out a solution. There are two cases:
  1. If your link is broken, you will automatically attempt to flee each time someone attempts to hit you. If you manage to flee, then you will be saved by divine forces, and put in a safe place until you reconnect to the game.

  2. If your link jams (freezes) you've got a problem. The only solution we can give, is that you break your link as quickly as possible. By breaking the link you can hope that the above procedure is initiated.

Mob
Mob is short for mobile object or sometimes just mobile. A mob is a non-sentient, non-playing character and can be a man, woman or any creature you may stumble upon in the mud. Sometimes their coding makes them look more or less like a real playing character. Each computer-generated and computer-controlled character is called a mob. Examples are the various shopkeepers in Ardenfall, the moneychanger, a dog or the Ardenfall City Guards.
NPC (Non Playing Character)
See mob.
OOC (Out Of Character)
Everything you say or do that has nothing to do with the role playing environment of the game. For example a playing character starts talking about what is on the TV or referring to some other In Real Life event. OOC information should never be used over global communication channels (shout, yell etc.).
PC (Player Character)
A Player Character or PC for short, is a character in the game with a real person controlling it.
PK (Player Killing)
Player Killing or PK for short, is when you kill another player, either deliberately or by sloppy use of an area spell, and is strictly forbidden here at AlexMUD.
Quest
A role playing event that usually involves several playing characters and at least one immortal - the Quest Master. A quest is centered around a theme and may involve slaying one or more mobs and solving some kind of puzzle or riddle. At the end of a quest it is not uncommon to receive a reward of some kind, a title or perhaps some special equipment. A well prepared and well made quest is one of the most fun parts of mudding.
Recall
Recall is a powerful scroll that will take you back to a safe place in the town where you last rented. If you for example last rented in Ardenfall, you will instantly be brought to The Temple Square. The more higher level clerics have a prayer that does the same thing.
RP (Role Playing)
The definition of role playing is simple. You play a role, just like an actor does. Developing the background of the character is harder but very useful if you want to become successful at role-playing. Use your imagination an make use of emotes and socials to express your feelings towards other characters and the world.
Shops

Shops are places, where the adventurer may purchase equipment for his quests, and where he may sell his treasure, if he should manage to survive the perils, with his life and sanity intact. Many shops trade only in a specific type of merchandise. Thus, a baker may well refuse to buy your armour, even if it is of high quality!

To some people, the prospect of obtaining the entire inventory of a shop by murdering the keeper may appear tempting - but beware: the shopkeepers are often rugged, capable men; roughened by years of trading and, indeed, surviving in a world where the only safe prospect is death in the end.

Skills
This command lists all of your known skills. A descriptive word or phrase is attached to each skill that gives a rough approximation of your current level in that skill (or ability). These words/phrases are (from bad to good):

Socials

Socials are commands that together with emote greatly enhances the role playing environment of the game. You can find a list of them by typing "help socials".

An extra immortal social command is: snowball
